Exhibitions, Museums and Art Galleries

Museums and art galleries are not typically connected with the traditional casino fare. Recently, however, casino tycoons have begun paving the way for the future of gambling and entertainment. Their recent additions to the gambling landscape, such as resort giants like Wynn Las Vegas, The Bellagio and The Venetian, pay homage to history and art as easily as they ensconce their gaming floors.

Art Gallery at the Bellagio

The Bellagio, opened in 1998, was one of the world’s most expensive and lavish resort casino hotels up until the recent opening of its owner Steve Wynn’s signature palace-Wynn Las Vegas. The Bellagio, however, broke new ground with its commitment to art and culture, on a par with the likes of Monte Carlo’s lavish European-style casinos and hotels.

Wynn designed the resort with an art gallery included. The Bellagio’s art gallery is fast becoming a reputable gallery for its regular showings of modern art masters such as Monet and Picasso.

But besides the actual, formal art gallery which features the same amenities as a more traditional art gallery, there is also the botanical gardens and conservatory where hundreds of different exotic species of plant life reside. Startling arrangements of floral displays change with the seasons and holidays.

Art and Architecture

Las Vegas architecture pays homage to nearly all periods of classical architecture, too. Many architects and designers have collaborated to provide surprisingly accurate detail and to instill exotic flavor in their newest resort casinos. The Luxor Hotel is not only shaped like an ancient Egyptian pyramid, but the hotel also features a museum-quality recreation of the tomb of King Tut, complete with painstaking facsimile of art and architectural details that might have a visitor believing they have actually ventured into the Egyptian desert.

Other Exhibits

Circus Circus offers a nearly non-stop live circus attraction that visitors can drop in and out of, at will.

Animal exhibits are a featured attraction at a number of resorts. The Tropicana features a daily exotic bird show while the Mirage maintains a dolphin exhibit and salt water aquarium and the MGM Grand features a lion habitat. Most of these are open to the public for tours and educational opportunities.

In the last decade, or so, the new casino resort design has been inspired by the wish to appeal to a broader range of audience, even including in the scheme of things a more high-minded art and culture.
